I remember as a young lady ready to be married and working at a local Riverside civil engineering firm, my boss and I were speaking about honeymoons. I can still remember him chuckle with a sparkle in his eye as he informed me that he went to Riverside, Ca for his honeymoon! He didn't live in Riverside at the time so when deciding on a honeymoon location, he and his soon to be wife decided to go to the Mission Inn in Riverside. Many may be surprised, like I was that Riverside was a get away place. People would drive out of the busy cities and head out for relaxation. There was a time when trains would bring travelers to the area. You can still see the old pergolas that line the street from the train depot towards the Mission Inn. These pergolas covered with I imagine wisteria, would provide a welcome relief of shade. Traveler were not the only thing trains transported! Riverside was once known as the Citrus Captial of the World. The wonderful citrus crops were dispersed by train nationally with the rail service. I remember working in the office as an assistant bookkeeper and human resources for the Gless family, a prominent, local citrus growing family. It was the 1990's and I learned so much about the orange industry. I never knew how much went into an orange from seed to market! Today much the area off Alessandro, Van Buren, Mission Grove and up to the 15fwy were covered with sweet smelling groves back then. The air would smell of orange blossoms in the early part of the year and it was heavenly! Today Riverside is a bustling city. Remnants of those sleepy days in Riverside are still around. You can see the parent orange tree at the cross section of Arlington and Magnolia. A reminder of the days of Riverside's citrus history. You can see the pergolas a reminder of weekend getaways and vacation holidays to the lovely Mission Inn. OH! and you can see the all the beautiful architecture in downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods. less
