How to Use Baking Soda in Your Laundry Room
That orange box of baking soda has a lot more uses than you think and its not just for baking! It is also an environmentally friendly and inexpensive solution for all your laundry needs. It is safe to use in both standard and the fancy high efficiency washers and one of the best ways to reduce the amount of chemicals in your home. Here are my top 5 favorite ways to use baking soda in the laundry room.
1. Help Eliminate and Reduce Odors
Lets face it body odors are gross and the body odors in our clothing and linens are caused by different types of bacteria. These bacteria are broken down and removed when we wash our clothing. Less expensive detergents don’t contain strong enough enzymes to remove it all so adding a half a cup of baking soda is a great way to boost your detergent and make it more effective.
2. Boost Bleach Performance
Bleach is typically used to help move odors and stains from laundry. However, if your water is too acidic your bleach may not work as effective. Just as baking soda boosts your detergent it can also boost your bleach. Thus, reducing the amount of bleach you use and you get points for reducing your impact on the environment.
3. It’s a Natural Fabric Softener
Adding a half of cup to your laundry can also help improve the pH level of the water in your washer balancing the amount of acidity or alkalinity. It creates a shield from minerals that deposit on our clothing making them stiff, thus making your clothes naturally softer.
4. Clean Your Iron
If the bottom plate of your iron is starting to look funky then its time to break out that orange box and make a paste with a bit water. Rub this paste all over the cool plate and wipe simply wipe away with a cloth!
5. Controls Water Suds
If you accidentally use regular detergent in your high efficiency washer this will cause a mess of suds! Don’t panic, just grab that orange box again and sprinkle it into the machine. The baking soda will break down the suds making clean up a lot easier.
